The term has come to mean a wide range of special and unusual dance moves, including dips, slides, and tricks. Here we attempt to describe the diversity of aerials. The aerials listed in this article are grouped somewhat arbitrarily into classic aerials; jumps and cannonballs; charleston jumps; lifts; something; flips; base aerials; dips; slides and spins; drags and slop; theatrics and gymnastics; and miscellaneous. The leader (most frequently, though not exclusively, a man) is called the base, because they usually support the follower (usually a woman) who is called the flyer, because they usually fly through the air. This article should not be used for teaching or learning aerials. We recommend coaching to learn aerials, and the use of trained spotters. Aerials that seem easy can be quite dangerous. Learning the timing and technique of aerial steps is a long process, and can be dangerous is conducted under unsafe conditions by untrained instructors or dancers.
